Bun Cars Say Busmen: To relieve traffic congestion which they say is wrecking timetables, busmen in Birmingham and Coventry are asking local authorities to ban all but essential private car users from their city centres. The Birmingham district passenger transport branch of the T.G.W.U., in asking for such a ban, also wants clearways for buses, an embargo on all commercial traffic not making essential deliveries and the removal of parking meters.

Manchester Plan Not Approved: Priority for buses, particularly at peak hours, formed one of the main recommendations in a report by the Manchester transport committee which was debated by the City Council last week. The need for special bus lanes was urged, as was a suggestion that buses might have a reserved lane to travel against the main traffic 'flow in oneway streets. A call was made for the removal of the fuel tax and it was suggested that various municipal undertakings should be reorganized into regional operating units. A proposal that the report should be approved in principle and a sub-committee formed to survey traffic problems and to study the suggestions was defeated. The Council confined itself to " receiving " the report, it being observed that bus services could not be considered in isolation.

Bus Dispute May Be Settled : Talks between the Thames Valley Traction Co. Ltd. and Reading's transport undertaking on the co-ordination of certain services may he resumed shortly after a break of two years. New Express Service: Crosville Motor Services Ltd. start a new fast service from Liverpool to London tomorrow, Saturday. The journey time will be cut by more than three hours to less than seven hours and the fare will be under £.2 return. The company says that when the motorways link in the Birmingham area is completed, the time saving will be "even more startling ". L.T. Workers' Art Show : London bus and tube workers will hold their 17th annual art show in the exhibition hall of Charing Cross underground station for four weeks from next Monday. More than 150 exhibits will be on show to the public, for four weeks (Mondays to Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.), until December 14. Admission is free.

Mr. A. G. Brown has been appointed London sales and service manager cf Standard Triumph. Mr. A. S. Luson, previously manager of the London sales office in Berkeley Square, is now able to devote his full attention to the problems of distribution as London wholesale manager.

Mr. Richard Perkins, generalmanager of the Perkins Group's U.K. operations, Mr. J. G. Dawson, director of engineering, and senior Perkins officials welcomed a Russian delegation to the Peterborough engine works recently. Among the Russian visitors, who commented that they were "very impressed ", were Mr. Y. Kozhin, vice-president of Autoexport, Mr. L. Vacilijef, director, Moskovitch factory, and Mr. F. Chinchenko and Mr. A. Prosvienin, chief engineer and chief designer respectively of the Gaz factory.

Obituary lyjE regret to record the death of Mr. VI' E. A. Shield.

Mr. Shield, who was chief executive and general manager in England of A. Schrader's Son, division of Scovill Manufacturing Co., Birmingham, died suddenly last week. He was 55 and joined Schrader in 1922.
