Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

NEW among the wheeled exhibits at the Building Exhibition, which opened at Olympia. London, on Wednesday for two weeks, are a small pedestrian-controlled oil-engined mobile shovel by F. E. Weatherill, Ltd., a Thwaites hydraulically controlled dump truck (The Commercial Motor, October II) and a Nuffield Universal tractor with the B.M.C. three-cylindered oil engine. There is also a new power assembly, incorporating a Lister twineylindered oil engine, for the Auto-Truck.

The new dump truck produced by the Thwaites Engineering Co., Ltd., Cubbington, Leamington Spa, has been designed for operation with any number of detachable skips, so that the operative does not have to leave his seat or wait for skips to be filled at turn-round points. Up to a toa can be dealt with per cycle.

The standard skip will carry 8 Cu. ft. of concrete or 14 Cu. ft. of heaped earth, and the machine can operate as a conventional dumper tipping in the normal manner. Bottom-discharge concrete-pouring skips of 14-cu.-ft. capacity may also he carried. The skips are raised, lowered and tipped by a hydraulically operated cylinder and wire rope controlled by a two-position hand lever on the steering column.

Accessibility Improved

Other Thwaites exhibits are a 11-cu.-yd. Tusker dumper, recently redesigned to provide better accessibility to all working parts and having an improved steering box, and a 15-cwt. Nimbus dumper, to be presented to the winner or the dumper competition.

Two tractors are being displayed by the Nuffield Organization. They are a Nuffield Universal Four and the new Nuffield Universal Three, which is being shown for the first time. The latter machine is powered by the B.M.C. 2.551-litre threecylindered oil engine, which develops 37 blh.p. at 2,000 Loan. as installed in the tractor. The unit is derived from the current B.M.C. 3.4-litre engine.

A minimum crawling speed of 0.5 m.p.h. is obtainable, whilst the top speed of 14 m.p.h. should he of value for road

work. Optional equipment includes a hydraulic lift, power take-off, independent power take-off, belt pulley and electric lighting. The wheelbase is 6 ft. 1 in., and the machine is 9 ft 7 in. long and 5 ft. 8 in. wide.

To enable petrol-engined Lister AutoTrucks, manufactured by R. A. Lister and Co., Ltd., Dursley, Glos, to be converted readily to oil-fuel operation, a new power unit is being produced. The drive from the engine is taken through a single-plate clutch and primary roller chain to a two-speed-and-reverse gearbox coupled to the single front road wheel by reduction gearing. The two-cylindered air-cooled oil engine develops 7 bhp.

Apart from the new model, F. E. Weatherill, Ltd., Tewin Road, Welwyn Garden City, Herts, are showing the 2HCItA four-wheel-drive mobile loading shovel, which has power-assisted steering and a 7-ft.-wide scoop.

Principal exhibit of David Brown Construction Equipment. Ltd., Hanworth Park, Feltham, iS the Overshot loader, which has the ability to operate in confined spaces because of its straight-line Oiling and dumping technique. The 5-ft. 10-in.-wide bucket has a capacity of 1 cu. yd. and is hydraulically operated by one lever. It can be filled and emptied at a rate of 25 seconds per load. The loader is carried on and forms an integral part of a 50 TD tracklayer chassis powered by a six-cylindered 50 h.h.p. oil engine.

Mackay Industrial Equipment, Ltd., Faggs Road, Feltham, Middx, display a Tractomotive TL.12D Tracto-loader, an Allis-Chalmers HD.6G Tracto-shrivel and a Merton Two-way loader. Power for the TL.12D is supplied by a 70 b.h.p. sixcylindered oil engine and this drives all four wheels through a hydraulic torque converter giving speeds of up to 25 m.p.h. on the road. The 14--eu.-yd. bucket, when loaded, can be raised from the ground to its maximum height of 10 ft. in seven seconds. Steering is power assisted.

Liner Concrete Machinery Co., Ltd., Park Road, Gateshead, 8, offer a Nipskip 10-cwt. dumper powered by a Villiers 31-h.p. petrol engine, and a Roughrider 15-cwt. oil-engined dumper with two-position skip. The engine is a Lister 7-h.p. air-cooled unit.

New Digger

A much advanced and larger model of the Dinkum Digger, known as the Major, is announced by Whitlock Bros., Ltd.,' Great Yeldham, Essex, and is making its first public appearance at,the Exhibition.

The Dinkum Digger Major provides a continuous slew and digging action through an arc of 190', a reach of 18 ft, and has a loading height of 12 ft. 6 in. Excavation can be effected to a depth of 14 ft., and there. is a range of buckets from 10 in. to 54 in. wide.

The hydraulic system incorporates several special features. A slow-running pump driven from the power-take-off shaft is said to ensure longevity, coupled with minimum maintenance. The system is fan-cooled and is given additional protection by the provision of full-flow micronic filters, strainers, an air cleaner, magnetic plugs and dual relief valves.

All vulnerable high-pressure hoses have been reduced to an average length of only 1 ft. 8 in. by building drawnsteel tubes into the main jib and into the frame and slewing post, which has a rotary valve combined with swivel bearing couplings to protect the power hose lines from stresses.

Basis of the Dinkum Digger Major is a Fordson oil-engined power unit.

A Whitlock power shovel of I-cu.-yd. capacity has also been introduced with the new digger, and is a larger version of the existing Dozaloda, which will strip, dig and load as well as bulldoze.
