Colonel Ashley said that he understood that London Authorities were considering carrying out works to improve ventilation.

The government confirmed that the longdistance road haulage industry would now be de-nationalised, giving greater powers to the Road Haulage Association. Transport minister William Rodgers outlined new plans to ensure that traffic flow would be disrupted as little as possible during maintenance work on 85 miles of motorway across the UK. He told MPs that the transport department would aim to keep two lanes in each direction open, carry out work at night wherever possible and make sure drivers were informed in advance of road works.

Rodgers said that the amount of motorway building during the 1960$ and the success of this in attracting heavy trucks from less suitable routes meant miles of surface now needed substantial repair.
