Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Falsification of two tachograph charts has cost a Middlesex truck driver £550 in fines and costs.

Jason Halsey, of Hayes, pleaded guilty to the offences when he appeared before Hillingdon Magistrates.

Prosecuting for VOSA, Anthony Ostrin said that the offences came to light when tachograph records belonging to Halsey's employer, Southall-based Coles Distribution, were checked. Two charts in Halsey's name showed at first sight that a break had been taken when in fact a closer examination revealed that Halsey had clearly opened the head of the tachograph and removed the chart before carrying on driving.

When interviewed, Halsey had admitted removing the charts to show that a rest had been taken. He claimed his father had been seriously ill at the time and he had been anxious to get home. Halsey told the magistrates that his father had since died. Ostrin said that these were serious offences brought before the court by VOSA in the interests of road safety. The magistrates fined Halsey £150 on each offence, and ordered him to pay £250 towards the costs of the prosecution.
