• Only £1 of every £4.50 collected in road tax is currently spent on the roads, says the AA. The association wants Chancellor John Major to use next week's Budget to provide substantially greater funds to reduce urban congestion, increase road fund grants to local authorities, and invest more resources in road accident research (see lead story, page 4).
