• Chassisless trailers intended for RO-RO ferry work will need major redesigning if, as expected, new regulations covering onboard stowage and security are introduced.
An investigation by the DTp's Marine Directorate, stemming from the DTp's Trailer Task Force (set up a year ago to raise the standard of HGV trailers) has looked into the safe loading and operation of trailers being shipped by sea.
The principal requirement will be the provision of highstrength points on each side of a trailer, but the load rating for each securing eye will be such that most chassisless designs will prove difficult to modify or redesign.
