Addressing members of the FTA East Midlands Division last week, he said notions that we should not be moving goods around so much and that people should consume goods where they were located was simply not on, Mr Payne said that industry did not use road transport because it had a partiality towards the road vehicle but because road transport best met the needs of the customer.

On the Armitage Inquiry, he said that it was vital that a limited or short-sighted approach should not prevail and that the Inquiry could have a far-reaching effect on lorry operation.
