Final link-up

FROM Mr. J. Churm, head of the Halifax Cleansing and Transport Department, hear that they have a new central depot in the process of completion which it is hoped will be in full use this summer. The centralized transport department at Halifax was founded in 1919 but the amalgamation with the cleansing department took place only a little over five years ago. The establishment of the new central depot is the final stage in the link-up of the two sections, bringing both under one roof.

Full steam

SHEFFIELD REGIONAL HOSPITAL BOARD is the possessor of an impressive low-loader which puzzles many of those who encounter it on the road. Mounted on it is a 12,500lb per hour capacity steam boiler by G.W.B. Boilers Ltd., together with feed tank, chimney, pneumatic coal handling plant and other ancillaries.

The portable boiler is for use in the case of a failure in any of the Sheffield Board's hospitals at each of which specially designed terminal points have been fitted. Thus, if required, the boiler unit can readily be connected up immediately on arrival. There are some 200 hospitA in the Board's area which spreads over 5,680 square miles.

The unit is built on a standard King trailer, with removable gooseneck and rear end, and the tractor is an ERE with Cummins NH 220 power unit, Fuller 15speed direct drive gearbox with doubledrive Kirkstall T48 spiral-bevel-and-spur rear axle with lockable third differential. Total weight is 60 tons and the length is. over 50ft.

Up in the world

SIMON hydraulic platforms continue to extend their scope. The new LH28 design enables two men and tools to be lifted to working heights of up to 28ft, using a vehicle such as the long wheelbase LandRover. The effective payload has been raised to 3751b whereas previously the figure was restricted to 2501b. With the latter size of the platform only single-man working was possible.

This equipment has many possibilities for duties requiring quick access to overhead working positions. Personnel are carried in a glass fibre cage at the end of a hydraulically-operated arm which is turntable-mounted; an elbow joint gives a horizontal outreach of 12ft 3in. from the centre.

Six in a cage

DUDLEY, the home of Simon hydraulic platforms, recently took over its first Simon Snorkel fire-fighting and rescue unit. The 65ft Snorkel, carrying a cage in which no fewer than six adults can be accommodated, is now in service with the town's Fire and Ambulance Department.

The Dudley unit is carried on a RollsRoyce engined chassis by ERE. This company has now made available fire tender designs with full crew cabs built by the ERF associate, J. H. Jennin and Son Ltd. Until quite recently EF fire appliances incorporated only t front half of the cab, leaving the remainc of the coachwork for completion 1 specialist bodybuilders.
