• An NAFWR protest about difficulties and cost increases which the Transport Bill would cause for furniture removers was delivered to the Minister on Tuesday by the general secretary, Mr. Hugh Wilson.
The NAFWR memorandum calls for; the inclusion of all hire-and-reward vehicles of 30cwt and below within the scope of operators' licensing and the proposed new drivers' hours regulations; the control of unlietnsed vehicles through Construction and Use regulations: maintenance of the right of existing operators to object to licence applications; power to be given to LAs to take account of the needs of specialized traffic; and the same latitude on drivers hours to be given to furniture removers as is planned for coach operators.
Meanwhile, the Coal Merchants' Federation is worried about quantity licensing's effect on bulk fuel traffic and doubts the ability of the railways to provide a sufficiently fast and reliable service in all weathers. The CM F said this week that the Transport Bill could increase coal delivery costs to consumers by 5s to 7s per ton.
