Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Transport engileering staff concerned in the compilation )f the regulations and, although the vfinistry officials stressed that they were lot permitted to interpret regulations, ionfirmation was given that the intention af the regulations on this point is as aready stated; inthe simplest terms, the

illuminated areas specified are as seen Jirectly from the front (front corner amps) and directly from the front and 'rom the rear (side marker lamps) and Jo not refer to the amount of lighting teen directly from the side of the vehicle. klthough, of course, the regulations make t clear that both types of lamp must ihow some light to the side.

It will be seen from this that many amps currently available from manufacurers will fill the bill; for example, Undard domed sidelight units will do for 'ront corner markers and certain types of 'Acing lights as sold for car use will be idequate for side markers provided the enses are of the right size and there is ;ufficient light emitted to the side.

Lamps originally designed for other mrposes form the range offered by Joseph _.ucas Ltd., to suit the new regulations. (tree are suitable for front corner lamps, he L58I, L594 and L691. All have lomed lenses, measuring 3.25 in. dia. by 1.625 in. deep; 2.125 in. dia. by 2 in.; and 1-25 in. dia. by 1.75 in., and cost 17s. 3d., 15s. 6d. and £1 respectively. For side narkers Lucas offers a lamp designed as 1. parking lamp, the L610, which has 1.375 in. dia. domed lenses and measures 1-25 in. from the mounting face to the mtside of the case. and the L579, which s designed for use on tractors. The L610 ;osts 13s. 6d. and the L579 £1 4s.

Lucas is currently developing lamps specially designed to meet the requirements (one front corner and one side). Both will have flat mounting faces so that the drilling of large holeswill not be necessary.

Current-production lamps are also offered by Raydyot Ltd., Waterfall Lane, Old Hill, Staffs. As a side marker lamp, a parking lamp-the Pippin-is put forward at a price of 16s. and for the front corner position the ML 611500 is suggested. The latter is a streamlined lamp and costs £1.

As reported in The Commercial Motor of March 1, Flexible Lamps Ltd., Rubbolite House, Centre Drive, Epping. Essex, has a Rubbolite lamp in various versions which meet the requirements for both front corner and side marker lamps. These have oval blister lenses 3.5 in. by 3 in. by 3..5 in. high in red and clear or all clear, depending on the application. As well as the lamps themselves, the kits include all necessary wiring, a junction box and so on: Dyson charges £2 8s. for its front -corner lamp kit and £2 13s. for the side marker lamp kit, while the York kits cost £3 in each case and, for an extra £1. York depots will carry out the fitting_ Flexible Lamps is to put on the market shortly a special front corner lamp with a domed lens about 1.375 in. in diameter. This will cost 8s. or 9s. 6d. with a mounting bracket.

A Della lamp designed specifically for the regulations is available now. from Judella Castings Ltd., The Runway. South Ruislip, Middx. This can be had with two types of bracket, the difference being that one, the 6342, has a fiat base (a hole has to be drilled in the body for the bulb spigot) whilst on the other, the 6341, the base has legs on it. A desirable feature

of the lamp is that the bracket is carried over and under the Diakon lens to protect it from damage. The lamp has a clear lens but a red half-lens insert can be added if the lamp is used as a side marker. Dimensions of the rectangular domed lens are 2.75 in. by 1-5 in. by 1-125 in. deep. Also offered by Judella as a corner marker is a side-light type, the Della 605 IC, which has a 3'125-in.dia. lens with a 1.5-in.-high dome. The 6342 costs 1 Is., the 6341 Its. 9d. P. M. G. Thorpe Ltd., Springfield, Yeadon. Yorks, also makes lamps to suit front corner and side marker requirements. A number of existing parking and marker lamps made by L. E. Perei Auto Devices Ltd., Sunbury-on-Thames, Middx., are suitable for the new regulations. Particularly so for the front corners are the ML8 and RL9 with clear 2.5 in. dia, domed lenses at 85. 6d. each and for side markers there are the FL20 at 13s. 6d. and the IvIL41 at 9s. 6d.
