• European environment ministers agreed last week to the mandatory fitting of catalytic converters to all new petrol-powered light commercial vehicles with engines under 1.4 litres from 1 January 1993.
The converters are designed to cut exhaust emissions by 60%, but are expected to add 2300 to the price of the vehicle, and increase fuel consumption by up to 20%.
Ford and Vauxhall plan to introduce converters as standard before that date.
Strong Scania
• Strong sales of Scania trucks are helping to offset a big drop in sales of Saab cars in the United States, according to the company's figures for the first four months of this year.
Scania truck deliveries are up 32%. The number of trucks and buses sold reached 11,800, with 91% of them sold outside Sweden.
