Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Job prospects are looking gloomier for the road haulage industry, according to the latest survey from employment company Manpower.

Only 26% of transport firms plan to recruit more staff in the next three months, compared with a national average of over 30%, and 7% of hauliers will be laying off workers. Last year no haulage firm in the survey expected lay offs.

Prospects in vehicle manufacturing look brighter, with 40% of firms planning staff increases and only 3% predicting cut backs.

The North-East plans to recruit most workers — but also tops the job cut league.
