• The Government has rejected calls from Charles Kennedy MP for action against the "unscrupulous use of computer services by certain freight forwarders".
Consumer Affairs Secretary Eric Forth wrote to Kennedy insisting the open market offers the best prospect of efficient trading in both goods and services. "Licensing to control access to the freight forwarding business would be unnecessarily cumbersome and restricitve on what should be a selfregulating market," says Forth. "In any event, given the essentially international nature of the business, I do not think that a UK licensing system would resolve the difficulties."
