• Vauxhall and Bedford dealers are to set up MasterFit outlets for light CVs and cars, offering quick, fixed-price replacement work such as tyres and exhausts, and MOT tests. They will stay open until 20:00hrs on weekdays.
M-B's vee-eight
• Mercedes-Benz's 1726 naturally-aspirated vee-eight tractive unit, which will replace the old 1625, is currently undergoing UK Type Approval and is expected to go on sale in Britain by September. The 1726 has a 194kW (260hp) 0M442 engine coupled to MercedesBenz's own six-speed gearbox, which replaces the previous ZF unit.
Slowing down
• Average traffic speeds in London have fallen to 18.9km/h in the morning peak period, 23.4km/h during off-peak times, and 18_6 km/h in the evening peak, says the DTp.
Sherwood coup
• South Yorkshire distributor Kirkby Trucks has been taken over by Sherwood Leyland Daf for more than £1 million. The deal, which doubles the size of Sherwood Leyland Daf and gives it almost 4% of the UK CV market, was set up in April. The company expects to sell about 850 vehicles this year.

• Tibbett and Britten director Tony Stanton has been appointed president of the Freight Transport Association.

• Some 40% of large British companies have already prepared their distribution strategy for the SEM, says a MORI survey for the CBI.
Unigate up
• Unigate's distribution business, which includes Wincanton, pushed up its profits by 15% to 230.2 million in the year ending 31 March 1989.
