• North Western Traffic Commissioner Martin Albu has revoked the PSV licence held by C H Redfern but granted its successor, Redferns of New Mills, a new fourvehicle licence for six months.
In March of last year Redfern was warned that further maintenance problems could lead to the loss of its licence.
Vehicle examiner Geoffrey Davidson said that following a complaint from Stockport MBC about the wheels on a bus on a school run coming adrift, he had inspected the vehicle concerned. The wheel hubs had been replaced and he issued a delayed prohibition. He subsequently inspected two further vehicles, imposing immediate prohibitions on both. In February 1988 Redfern was fined .21,000 for two offences of using a vehicle subject to a prohibition, and was convicted of a tachograph offence.
Managing director George Rawson said C H Redfern had ceased trading in November 1988. There had been problems with drivers and he wanted a fresh start with a new record. The wheels coming adrift had been a problem with the bearings which could not have been foreseen. Past maintenance problems had been due to the operation of too many vehicles and too much work. The company was now proposing to operate four vehicles with one spare. A new fitter had been employed.
Questioned about finance, Rawson said his house was presently securing a bank loan of £30,000 arid he was taking out a loan of ,W0,000, secured on the assets of the business, to pay off that and other debts.
Granting the licence, Albu said there would be a further maintenance investigation, and he would want full financial evidence before the licence was renewed in December.
