Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Stagecoach subsidiaries Cumberland and Ribble will swap vehicles and depots in Cumbria this weekend (18 June), giving Cumberland complete control over all Stagecoach operations in the county.

Ribble hands over its Lakeland business, which includes depots at Kendal, Barrow and Ulverston plus a fleet of 110 buses — half of which are minis.

The deal greatly strengthens CMS, which previously ran only a small depot at Keswick, and leaves Ribble with welldefined territory in Lancashire and Greater Manchester.

The transfer does not include the garage and bus station at Ambleside (closed at the end of May), but does cover the former Barrow Borough Transport depot. This site was reopened on 11 June by Stagecoach following its acquisition of BET, quelling fears that it would be sold for redevelopment.

Brian Souter, variously Stagecoach boss, Ribble managing director and Cumberland chairman, says: "As far as our customers are concerned, it will be business as usual."

Souter promises that there will be no route or timetable alterations in the wake of the deal and the two firms will have joint ticketing arrangements.
