Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Ryder Distribution Services has won its second homedelivery contract.

Under a three-year deal with furniture manufacturer Christie-Tyler, Ryder will run the Lyons Queensway subsidiary's 5,500m2 warehouse in Scunthorpe, Humberside and its national transport operation. 'he distribution service will Operate under Queensway's "Home Fast Delivery" banner.

The contract is due to start in the autumn, but a pilot scheme has already been launched in the M62 area. Once the operation is underway, Ryder will be using its UK network of more than 150 depots.

Since the American company set up its distribution ann in Britain last year, eight depots dedicated to distribution contracts have been started and Ryder plans to expand its distribution centre network further during the next year.

Christie-Tyler's distribution was previously undertaken by local hauliers. Now Ryder has secured the home delivery contract, it plans to buy 28 new vehicles for the operation and take on another 60 staff. It expects to make around 60,000 deliveries for the furniture firm in the first year.

Ryder could be following its customers onto the Continent in preparation for 1992. Both Ford and General Motors are pressuring the US company to extend its American car transport operation into Europe, says Ryder System chairman Tony Burns. Ryder is already working in Germany on a Ministry of Defence contract, hauling tanks.
