He describes fruit as "bad company" for flowers because as it ripens it gives off gases that affect the keeping qualities of, for instance, roses and tulips.

"So never put a vase of flowers next to your fruit dish," he warns. "Nor is it advisable to carry fruit and flowers in the same trailer."'
