Mr. Beal, in his presidentiaItddress, said that the past year had shown grave deterioration in the industry. The economic situation had affected it more disastrously than any other major industry.

Presenting the wages report, Mr. I. E. Bissell said that employers' representatives at the recent negotiations felt that the wage demands of the workers would have to be met in order to keep the industry comparable with others and to prevent the loss of labour which was taking place in some districts.

Arising from a point as to whether purchasers of chassis should be compelled to have the bodies .built by the companies from whom the chassis were ordered, a resolution was passed instructing the general secretary to point out to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders that some of its members imposed a condition of

sale. .

Several members gave instances ofreceiving instructions from clients to build bodies on chassis to be delivered, but when the chassis suppliers were told that the order for the body had been placed elsewhere they refused delivery.

L.T.E. GARAGE PLANS

TOprovide covered accommodation for 1,000 buses, London Transport Executive is going ahead with its garage-building plans. Four new garages are being built in the central area—one, at Peckham, is already occupied—and three in the country area. In addition, nine existing centralarea garages are being reconstructed.

This work is distinct from that being carried out in connection with the tram-conversion scheme. This provides for two new garages and the conversion of seven depots. •
