Making the Great West Road Safer for Traffic.

Some time ago the Ministry of Transport asked Middlesex County Council to consider placing a barrier down the centre of the Great West Road. In the opinion of the county engineer and surveyor, the only safe type of barrier would be a central reserve 6 ft. wide, which would cost about £17,000, and would reduce the road on each side to the inadequate width of 22 ft. Tc increase the width of each section to 30 ft. would cost £80,000-£100,000.

If additional refuges were provided at intervals of about 150 yds., motorists would be warned of the danger of crossing the centre line for any distance, whilst some elasticity would be permitted to traffic. The cost in this case would be some £3,000.

The highways committee has urgei the Ministry to adhere to the original plan of laying a white line down the centre of the Great West Road for its entire length, and that observance of it should be compelled by Order. Col. Bressey, on behalf of the Ministry, voiced the opinion that an Order should be unnecessary, but he undertook to obtain the views of the Treasury solicitor as to whether an Order could be made without some physical boundary dividing traffic, The committee is awaiting the views of the Ministry.

Ulitninating a Dangerous Road.

Three county councils are to consider the joint construction of a new road, including bridges, from Gurnos Cross to Cwmily-nfell. The existing road is said to be extremely dangerous. A conference of representatives of the three areas has been summoned.
