Ar Cardiff on Monday a decision on the application for a variation of a Contract A licence by A. G. Orchard and Co. Ltd., Newbridge, Mon., was again reserved (see COMMERCIAL MOTOR, May 27). The variation was to cover a 4-1-ton tipper to be used to transport quarry material for William Adams and Co. Ltd., of Newport.

The South Wales Licensing Authority, Mr. R. R. Jackson, who had previously asked for records of loads carried, listened to a detailed report of the tonnage transported during the month of May.

It was again alleged that Mr. Orchard was overloading his present lorry and in the circumstances it would not be a paying proposition to grant another licence at the present rate offered by William Adams.

The company secretary of William Adams said it was the hauliers who were responsible for the maximum loads carried, but he did not wish to be associated with breaking the law and would see that future loads were within the limits allowed. He also stated that they were looking into the rate to be paid for contract work.

A Ministry of Transport spokesman said thar on one occasion when Mr. Orchard's lorry was examined it was found to exceed the maximum tonnage, and part of the load had to be taken off.

Mr. Rosser John, who appeared for objectors W. J. Clayton and Sons Ltd., J. E. Roderick and T. and W. Transport (Risca) Ltd., said that the continual overloading of lorries was endangering the public highways.
