CHAIRMAN of the West Riding area of the RHA, Ald. William Bridge, said last week at a special rates meeting held by 30 representatives of the York sub-area that he would not continue to work for his firm (Flowers Transport Ltd.) if road haulage charges did not go up.
"But then I am in the fortunate position of having other interests", he said. "This policy of the Government could put lots of people out of business." These were the small firms, but the stage had been reached where it was not possible for the road haulage industry generally to continue to absorb—without higher charges—the increasing cost of overheads.
The meeting then agreed that charges, certainly so far as York and district were concerned, must go up between 5 and 9 per cent.
