route of a 61-mile western extension to the Maidstone by-pass motorway. This extension—the Ditton by-pass—will bring A20 (M) up to 14 miles of motorway. It is expected that coilstruction will start in 1968-9. From the present end of the Maidstone by-pass. near Aylesford, the new motorway will run westwards, by-passing the congested stretch of A20 at Ditton and West Mailing and rejoining the trunk road just north of Wrotham Heath.

M4 Extension: The route for a further 30 miles of M4 between Tormarton and Liddington has been fixed by the Minister of Transport. This scheme now completes the line of the motorway through Gloucestershire and establishes all but about two miles of the route through Wiltshire.
