UNION LEADERS are staging and third-party contractors to set a series of mass meetings around the country as part of a campaign to win a better deal for oil tanker drivers.

RonWebb.Transport& General Workers Union national secretary for road transport,says 250 drivers gave overwhelming backing to the campaign at the first meeting in Immingham, Lincs,last week.

He urged them to put pressure on the government, oil companies industry-wide benchmarks for pay. working conditions, pensions and training.

"No one wants to see a repeat of the fuel blockades, so both industry and government have a responsibility to work with us to address concerns and avoid another stranglehold on the nation's oil supplies," he says.

A series of nine meetings are planned near oil refineries; T&G general secretary luny Woodley will speak at one of them.

The campaign, which was launched in October. scored its first success when the three contractors who jointly deliver fuel for Shell agreed to offer final-salary pension schemes to all 500 drivers (CM 8 January).The offer is worth 17.5% when a 4.5% increase in the basic hourly rate is included; drivers will vote on the offer next week (19-23 January).
