IT IS DISTRESSING that a company of the standing of Knowles Transport should find itself in the circumstances highlighted in your article (CM 18 December 2003 ). It is also disappointing that it should seek to blame others for its current situation.
Knowlesihnsport asked the RHA to provide a basic driver's hours tachograph chart analysis service at a competitive price and the content and format required were agreed at the time. It consisted of a weekly printout of activities and infringements, including speeding for each driver, together with a driver's warning memorandum. The company received exactly this.
We have no control over the use made of the valuable management information and it would appear the company did not act upon it even though we specifically drew our concerns to its attention in writing in 2001, as indicated in your report. At the same time we made an offer to assist the company with drivers' hours and tachograph training for its drivers, with a view to improving compliance levels.
We sincerely hope that the company is able to overcome the present difficulties and we reiterate our training offer.
