A PROPOSED £450m six-lane toll bridge across the Thames in east London will be jointly funded by the government and the Transport for London agency. according to London's Mayor.
Ken Livingstone announced the deal on Friday (9 Jan) but environmentalists are objecting strongly and the scheme will be the subject of a public inquiry before final approval.
The bridge, which will link Thamesmead with Beckton. will be one of the biggest infrastructure projects in the country and its joint funding will be conducted as a Private Finance Initiative.
The proposed toll for trucks using the bridge will be £5.80the toll will also be used to pay forth construction retrospectively.
The development case for th, bridge is that it will help creat, jobs and housing on both side of the river. TfL estimates that i could put an extra 600,000 job within 45 minutes of Thamesmeal and bring an extra 25.000 jobs ti the area in the long term.
