Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

It seems only 0.3% of trucks are usin the M6 Toll. Guy Sheppard reports.

A SNAP SURVEY of HGV traffic shows that only a tiny proportion of operators are opting to use the new M6 Toll motorway around Birmingham.

During a twohour period last week (5 January). six trucks were spotted between junctions T5 and T6 of the toll road while 1,708 trucks were seen on the M6 at Junction 10 near Walsall.

This suggests that just one in every 285 trucks goes along the toll motorway instead of the M6.

However the huge difference in numbers may partly be explained by the time of day the research was carried out.

The Express & Star newspaper did the survey between Ham and lpm well clear of the morning and evening rush hours when the

attraction of using the toll will h at its greatest.

So far toll operator MEL, whic has been hea ily criticised f charging £10/true has not reveale an average of th number of truck using the 27-mil toll road.

Steve Cop transport manage for Stan Robinso (Stafford), whic sends 25 or s trucks a day soul along the M6, says none are bein diverted along the M6Toll.

"It's far too expensive for tht advantage you get out of it," ht explains. "Unless the price drop considerably we won't be using it."

Research by traffic informatior specialist 1tis shows traffic speed: along the M6 rose by 30% imme diately after the M6 Toll openec (CM 8 January).
