• City analysts say they would not be surprised if Tankfreight was the next business to be sold by NFC following reports that the group is hoping to dispose of the operation.

Last year NFC said parcels carrier Lynx and BRS's car leasing operation; now analysts believe that the UK's largest transport group might be planning more sales.

But NFC will only say: "We do not comment on any market rumours." NFC is pressing ahead with Project Stride—its current programme of depot closures—following last year's sales. The group puts the tally of depot closures across the whole operation at more than 30.

"We are not trying to make people redundant but to make the operation more efficient," it says.

Last June NFC chief executive Gerry Murphy said it would be forced to slash up to 600 jobs and cut about 20% of sites involved in truck rental and contract hire.
