NEW MERSEYSIDE WAGES AGREEMENT?

A joint sub-committee of the Conference of Liverpool and District Road Transport Employers and the Liverpool Carters and Motormen's Union is deliberating on the possibility of arriving at a new agreement defining the wages and conditions of Merseyside roadtransport workers.

About 12 months ago, the trade union put forward a claim for an allround increase in wages; the employers were unable to entertain this, so the agreement which had existed between the parties continued to be operative. The purpose of the negotiations now in progress is to set up standards of wages and working conditions applicable to motormen employed by A and B-licence holders, comprising those working within the Merseyside district, and those operating to and from it. When completed and signed, the new agreement will form part of the general agreement covering the North-Western Area.

Taxation Assistance Appreciated.

Evidence of the success of the scheme for financial assistance regarding Road Fund taxation is given by the Metropolitan Area of A.R.O., which sponsored the idea.. The scheme, to which reference was made in our issue dated December 25, concerned the full payment of hauliers' Road Fund taxation for the year, the operator paying the tax in monthly instalments.

The area office now reports that when the scheme was completed, business to the value of £.11,000 had been transacted on behalf of A.R.O. members. The success of this project has led to the consideration of another financial scheme and the Metropolitan executive committee is now working this out.
