the vehicle which has been specially constructed for Sir Charles Markham, the well-known diplomat, sportsman and big-game hunter, who, accompanied by his mother, Mrs. °Ilea, left during Christmas week on a four-months' trip through Africa. Starting at Algiers, their itinerary covers a journey across the Sahara and the Belgian Congo, then on to Uganda and Kenya and down to Tanganyika. After that the road is due south through Northern and Southern Rhodesia, over Bechuanaland to Johannesburg, terminating at Cape Town, which it is hoped will be reached about the end of April. The vehicle which has been selected for this long and hazardous trek, part of which will be through wild and

sparsely peopled country, comprises a standard Bedford 2-ton long-wheelbase chassis carrying a specially designed body.

The cab is roomy and the roof is railed in for luggage. The body is divided into two compartments and every aperture is protected with mosquito-proof netting, including the scuttle vents and top of the cab doors, The front compartment has a door which is fitted with bars to guard against road-bumps. • This section will be chiefly used for accommodating specimens, heavy luggage, etc.

The rear compartment has been made as comfortable as possible and will serve " as the living and sleeping room for Mrs. O'Hea. It contains a divan-bed, small drawer-wardrobe, folding table and other amenities, and is fitted with electric light and a wireless set. Sir Charles will sleep in a tent which is attached to the side of the caravan ; it is to be seen rolled up at the top of the near side of the body, in one of the accompanying pictures.

The whole outfit was supplied and the designs carried out by Hamilton Motors (London), Ltd., 466-490, Eclgware Road, London, W.2, the wellknown concern of Bedford distributors and commercial-vehicle specialists,
