An Important Co-ordination of Road and Rail Interests in North-eastern Districts.

DETAILS became available last week . of another important scheme for the :.o-ordination of road and rail interests, this time in the north-east coast neighbourhood, where the Lemdou and North-Eastern Railway Co.

have, it said, made working arrangements with five bus undertakings with an extensive chain of

services in the Tyneside area, County Durham and North Yorkshire. The companies concerned are the Reliance Express -Motors, Ltd., of Darlington ; the Eastern Express Motors, Ltd., of West Hartlepool: Messrs. • P. S. Blumer's Services, of Greatham, near West Hartlepool; the Billingliam and Haverton Hill MOtor Services, and the People's MotorServices, ' of Scarborough.

The four first-named concerns serve the large townsin the Tyneside, Wearside and Tees-side districts, whilst one of the companies runs a service as far south as Leyburn, in. Wensleydale, so that the railway company, with their recent acquisition of the businessof Messrs. -Emerson Bros., who work ekpress serVices between. Carlisle and Newcastle, have now a direct interest in a.chain of bus routes which is said to he larger than that of any bus concern working in the. north country. The total route mileage covered by the five undertakings is in the vicinity of 250 to 300, and they own over 100 machines.

Co-incident with the "new arrangement, the Express Motors and Messrs. Blumer's Services, who have previously worked joint services under Separate control, will be merged into one company. The Express Companies, it may herecalled, were launched over 1S months ago by Mr. A. A. Speak, who a few weeks ago inaugurated a sleeper coach service between Newcastle and London.
