You Can Get It At— Manufacturer " (Leeds).—The instrument for recording the resiliency of solid rubber tires for which you inquire is made by the Shore Instlument and Manufacturing Co., 555-557, West 22nd Street, New York.

Catalogue Received -Undoubtedly one of the most interesting catalogues which has reached us. for some while past, interesting riot only on account of the technical nature of its contents, but from the extremely artistic and carefully-considered manner in which it has been produced, is a booklet from Messrs. Critchiey Evans and Co., the sole British representatives of a German steel concern known as the Bergisch Stahlindustrie. A number of very clever reproductions of colour photographs showing steel forging, casting and rolling operations occupy the majority of the pages. Other pictures admirably serve to illustrate what is obviously a most complete modern steel-producers' factory equipment.

Rotax Lighting Sets.

Our illustration depicts an ahuninium, acetylene lighting projector recently introduced by the Rotax Motor Accessories Co., Great Eastern Street-, Lon

don, E.C. When inspecting the complete equipment at the company's showrooms, we were very favourably impressed by its neat and sturdy appearance, and were convinced that it will prove a very satisfactory acquisition to the motor-van. The easing of the lamp itself is made in cast aluminium, which affords strength, lightness and rigidity. No brazing or solder is utilized in its construction, and the entire absence of bolts and rivets ensures the withstanding

of vibration and hard usage. The projectors are fitted with Mangin lens mirrors, and the parabolic reflectors are heavily silver-plated. Bray's " Roni" type or burners are installed, and the outside fittings, hinges, fastener and feet are constructed of polished brass. The generator works on the drip-feed system; it is both economical and .clean in service. There are but three component parts in the construction the exterior and interior cylinders and a cover comprising water container and purifier. The carbide is carried on a special form of grate, located in the bottom of the generator, and the vibration of he vehicle causes the residue to fall away frtin the carbide and into a chamber beneath. The receptacle can be readily taken apart for cleaning purposes. Readers will do well to write for a copy of the new catalogue which has just been published by the company. We have perused this list, and must say that it is a concise and handy little book.

" C.M." Drop-lorged Steel Wheels for Commercial Vehicles.

It is becoming more and more recognized by manufacturers of vehicles of the heavier types that wheels constructed of steel possess many advantages over the older forms built up of wood. -This, of course, applies particularly to machines that are in service under severe and varying climatic conditions. An interesting type of wheel which has recently been brought to our notice is that manufactured by the National Steam Car Co., Ltd., 16, St. Helen's Place, London, E.C. The principal aim of this manufacturer, from the first, was to build a steel wheel which would possess at least as much tensile strength

as one constructed of cast-steel, but -which, at the same time would be free from the presence of blow

holes, which sometimes occur in the cast form. To this end the concern has evolved a wheel built of wrought steel, and throughout its construction there is no cast metal utilized.

The hub is a drop-forging accurately machined, and the spokes are of seamless, tubular steel, and electrically welded to the hub. The rim itself is made out of pressed steel. It is claimed that this class of wheel proves to be considerably lighter than -cast wheels made for equal duty, and that a saving is effected amounting in some cases to more than 80 per cent. This reduction of weight is a, feature which chassis builders will appreciate. All wheels are accurately balanced, a constructional refinement which is favourable to the reduction of tire wear. The " CM." production was originally designed as the direct outcome of the company's experience gained in running omnibuses in London and country services, and the undertaking is now engaged in their manufacture, we learn, for some of the bestknown makers of commercial vehicles.
