THE UNCLE OF A man stabbed to death at a haulage yard in West Yorkshire has welcomed a judge's refusal to reduce the murderer's sentence.
Gavin Hogg, a mechanic at a neighbouring business, stabbed three members of the Burrows family at M&B Haulage, Ravensthorpe, in September 2005. David Burrows, son of chairman Darrell Burrows, was killed.
In April 2006 Hogg was jailed for life with a recommendation that he serve at least 20 years before being considered for parole. The murder followed years of territorial disputes, arguments and violence against the Burrows family (CM 13 April 2006)it happened while Hogg was on bail for an earlier assault on Darrell.
David Burrows' uncle, Clive Hoyland, is MD of M&B. He welcomes the decision to refuse Hogg's appeal for a shorter sentence on the grounds of diminished responsibility: "Hogg has no grounds for appeal." The murder followed a series of incidents involving Hogg, who had spent time in a psychiatric hospital. These included threats to burn the firm down and to kill Darrell Burrows.
On the day of the murder Hogg drove at speed into M&B's yard, crashing into Hoyland's car before launching his attack (CM 26 October 2006).
