• I have been told that passing a car test no longer covers goods vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes and that some new drivers have to take a test for each vehicle they want to drive. Is that right? My son has just passed his car test. What does he have to do to get a licence to drive artics ?
• A person who has passed a Category B test (the normal car and light goods vehicle test) since 1 January 1997 must take further tests to drive vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, or with more than eight seats, or to draw a trailer over 750kg permissible maximum weight. To drive vehicles over 3.5 tonnes but not over 7.5 tonnes permissible maximum weight he must take a Category Cl test.
To drive vehicles over 7.5 tonnes he will have to take a Category C test and, for artics and drawbar outfits over 7.5 tonnes, he will have to take a Category C+E test.
To drive an antic over 7.5 tonnes he can go straight to a Category C test and, after passing that, go on to the Category C+E test. His Category C licence will also cover vehicles in Category Cl.
Remember, to drive vehicles over 3.6 tonnes and not over 7.5 tonnes a driver must be 18 years of age. To drive vehicles over 7.5 tonnes a driver must, unless he is registered as a trainee driver in the Young Large Goods Vehicle Driver's Training Scheme, be 21 years of age.
