Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• As Commercial Motor's Wheel LOSS Campaign gathers momentum, operators are coming up with useful technical suggestions, as well as cash donations.

Erith, Kent-based Mayer Newman & Co has to change more wheels than most: it is a scrap iron merchant whose trucks often suffer tyre damage on sites. "We never suffered loose or lost wheels running Leyland vehicles," says transport manager Brian Pearce, who points out that the Leylands' nearside wheel-studs have left-hand threads, with right-hand threads on the offside. "Changing our fleet to Continental vehicles, using righthand thread only, we have had to monitor the tightness of the nearside wheel nuts," says Pearce, "as they have been found to work loose."

The CM fund is designed to raise .M0,000 for further research to help establish a British Standard. Please make cheques payable to Commercial Motor Wheels Fund, and send donations to Commercial Motor, Room 403, Quadrant House, The Quadrant, Sutton, Surrey SM2 5AS.
