He was manoeuvring his unladen car transporter at a tricky junction in the town when it collided with a lamp-post winch fell across two parked cars. He went to his cousin's home nearby to phone a report of the accident and discovered that his had luck came in triplicate.
The two cars damaged by the lamppost were in the family. One belonged to John's cousin Edward, the other to Edward's son, Malcolm, who was visiting his father.
