THE YORK GROUP has pulled out of the 1980 Motor Show, saying that the National Exhibition Centre does not meet its requirements. But the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders disagrees.
York says that SMMT's 10year commitment to NEC means that there is no scope for a change of mind if the new crowd control measures fail, but SMMT says its agreement includes an option to hold separate commercial vehicle shows at any time when demand requires it.
SMMT went on to say that, while it was disappointed by York's decision, the resolution would ease its task of meeting the 24 per cent increase in demand for space in the commercial vehicle sections.
A York spokesman told CM that there are no plans to stage an alternative display in Britain, but the group will take part in Dutch and French shows in the coming months.
