BEFORE he retired as chairman of the National Freight Corporation a year ago, Sir Daniel Pettit gave a trophy for the best attempt by an NFC company to 'explain its annual results to the staff. He returned for the first prizegiving and shared the presentation ceremony with Victor, Paige, deputy chairman.

Victory chaired an independent panel of judges who, after studying 20 entries, awarded the trophy to National Carriers Ltd. Oddly enough, I understand that Brian Hayward, managing director, disliked the report when he first saw it. On this occasion his judgment let him down.

The report, which contained some clever ideas, was a supplement to Link, the company's house journal, and was backed by vivid posters, including blanks on which branch managers had to present their own results. Branch meetings were also held in pursuance of Brian's policy of encouraing closer contacts between branch managers and staff.

The southern region, in a particularly imaginative effort, produced a videotaped discussion between its managing director, John Parslow, and Leonard Parkin of ITV News at Ten.
