• Did you know that Rudolf Diesel's experiments with the compression-ignition oil engine that now bears his name were undertaken in the MAN works at Nuremburg? Or that Peugeot is the oldest French commercial vehicle manufacturer? It is snippets like these that give a flavour to Commercial Vehicles of the World, by J. F. J. Kuipers, just published at 13.00 by The Oakwood Press, Tandridge Lane, Lingfield, Surrey.
The title is a little pretentious; in fact Mr Kuipers, from Amsterdam, has taken 100 commercial vehicle makes from around the world and told their story with reasonable brevity; he does not delve into specifications except to make some point about the progress of the commercial vehicle.
Some experts will find the book rather too general and lacking in detail, but it provides a very reasonable perspective of truck and bus development and the slightly quaint English in places presumably reflects the fact that the author has bravely done his own thing in a foreign language; this is not a translation from the Dutch.
All the main truck and bus makers an here — with a fair spread of pictures — plus a few whose names will be unfamiliai to today's readers — Kaeble, Ishikawajima Oeticker, Oshkosh and so on. B.
