Masking tapes

TWO SELLOTAPE masking tapes with improved characteristics are now being marketed.

Sellotape All Purpose Masking Tape 255 1 is made from a new paper adhesive, formulated to produce a tape to cope with the latest stoving techniques used on the production line and in the refinishing shop.

It can be used with normal stovable paints applied by spray gun, either during low-bake staving (175-230deg.F. for 4060min) or in traditional systems.

The second new product is Sellotape High-Temperature Masking Tape 2581, introduced to take care of high-temperature work where paint is applied conventionally by spray gun or by the "hot spray" method (in which the paint is heated prior to application).

Designed to be complementary to 2551, it is also based on a lightly creped paper coated with a fully-cured adhesive. It performs perfectly with the normal stovable paints, including acrylic-resin-based paints, and also in convection (hot air) ovens and infra-red radiation ovens where temperatures up to 350deg.F. are reached for up to an hour.

Italian compressors

THE ITALIAN Odorici range of air compressors is now being handled and sold in the UK by Denis Leader (Machine Tools).

The comprehensive range consists of compressors with working pressures up to a maximum of 176 p.s.i. and tank capacities up to 850 litres (30 cu.ft.). Over 40 models are available, the majority being powered by petrol engines.

A model expected to have many applications is the 5/50 which is completely portable and has a 5-litre-capacity (0.18 cu.ft.) tank and works at a maximum pressure of 103 p.s.i. This unit sells at £80 complete with spray gun and hose. It is said to be very quiet in operation.

The concessionaires are currently appointing sub-agents to sell the compressors. Marketed by: Denis Leader (Machine Tools) Ltd., 119/120 Snargate Street, Dover, Kent. AUTOSF_AL gear pumps Series ASM.4 from Orr Products have been designed to handle mediumand low-viscosity liquids including liquefied gases. The largest, model ASM4 /16 /10 measures 15in. long by 9.125in. wide by 9.25in. high and is capable of flow rates up to 120gal a minute with differential pressures up to 150 p.s.i. and maximum pressures up to 400 p.s.i.

Pumps are supplied as bareshaft units for customers' own drive or mounted on baseplates with any type of power source. One version incorporates a 24V d.c. motor and is particularly suitable for use on tankers where silent pumping must be achieved.

The pumps are of the 1 to 1 drive-ratio, internal-gear type having specially shaped teeth to ensure quiet running, minimum frictional losses and automatic take up for wear. Other advantages of the design are said to be simple, robust construction with only two moving parts.

Low maintenance cost can be achieved because without removing the pump from the system the working parts can easily be cleaned or replaced by removing the end cover which is sealed by an "0" ring.

Easy stripes

A SCOTCH pressure-sensitive tape that facilitates the painting of decorative stripes on vehicle bodywork is now available from the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co.

The secret of the tape is a slitting process that allows a lengthwise strip of fin. wide red PVC to be pulled from the transparent tape after it has been laid in place. This leaves exposed the surface to be striped and the areas on each side of it protected by the rest of the tape. The stripe can then be painted quickly and accurately into the gap. Made by: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co. Ltd., 3M House, Wigmore Street, London, WI.

Price: 12s 6d per roll (36yd by ilit. wide).

Space heater

THE INSTANT JUNIOR B.50 heater added to the range of Master oil-fired portable space heaters marketed in this country by W. C. Youngman has an output of 50,000 Btu/hour —equivalent to 14.5 kW—and an air flow of 100 cult/min.

The heating unit, which is mounted above the fuel tank, incorporates a motor-driven fan and fuel-feed system with atomizer/ burner. A stainless steel combustion chamber is contained in a heavy-gauge steel housing. The heater is mounted on four legs and has two carrying handles.

Full use of all heat generated is a feature of the 13,50 so that there is maximum economy. Air induced by the propeller-type fan passes round the outer surface of the combustion chamber where it is heated before it is discharged, with air leaving the chamber itself by way of the after burner. Capacity of the fuel tank is 3.8gal and fuel consumption is said to average 0.28ga1 per hour. Weight without fuel is 461b.

Marketed by: W. C. Youngman Ltd., 96 Hackford Road, Brixton, Londoh, SW9.

Speedy tank-washer

THE WASHMOBILE Tanker-Wash machine manufactured by Southfield Equipment Ltd. has been developed in conjunction with Shell-Mex and B.F. Ltd. and Sunbeam Anti-Corrosives Ltd.

The plant is designed to provide rapid and automatic application of pre-diluted cleaning chemicals at a controlled rate of delivery and also allow the effective and rapid hand-spray application of chemicals to areas to which automatic application is not fully effective or economical. It also gives a low pressure, high volume water rinse to remove soil and chemicals.

A gantry carrying a series of jets provides a high-speed traverse for the application of foam and solvent and low-speed traverse for water rinsing; both can be applied in either direction. The equipment is operated from ground level and as well as forward /reverse switches there are chemical, water and air controls.

A second control system, independent of the ground-level station, enables the operator to "drive" the gantry to any desired position. Foot controls are fitted on working platforms on each side of the gantry and the design enables the operator to dispense with steps and the dangerous practice of climbing up and down the tanker during cleaning operations of heavy overspill areas.

By the use of' a new air-pressure system plus a series of Perritt-type valves, water, air and chemicals are pressurized up to the point of ejection and "fired" by push-button controls; there is no delay in refilling pipelines and no wastage as in systems where the water and chemicals drain out of the pipelines on to the wash-bay floor.
