Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I N a discussion on Weigh affairs in the House of Commons last week, Mr

Ness Edwards, the Postmaster-General, stressed the need for the development of the Midlands-South Wales road. and Mr. W. E. Jones drew attention to the poor condition of the Conway Bridge.

In reply, the Minister of Transport, Mr. A. Barnes. said that the Limitations on Government spending restricted work in these directions. The construction of a new bridge would cost £500,000.

The Minister continued: "1 quite agree . . . that we cannot continue indefinitely, in the face of the development of modern transport, to allow our roads to be in the condition in which they are to-day."

Before the war, annual road expenditure was between £60 m. and £70 m.

To-day it was under £50 m., which was equal to £30 m. before the war, taking increased costs into account.

This fund permitted maintenance of the existing road system at only about 70 per cent. the pre-1939 standard.
