CONCERTED attempts by coach operators running express services into and across London, to introduce longer and wider vehicles, appear to be in the offing. Applications have been lodged recently by Red and White Services, Ltd., Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co., Ltd.. Western S.M.T. Co., Ltd., United Counties Omnibus Co., Ltd., Maidstone and District Motor Services, Ltd., Shamrock and Rambler Motor Coaches. Ltd., Wilts and Dorset Motor Services, Ltd., Western Welsh Omnibus Co., Ltd., Gliderways Coaches, Ltd., Braithwaite Tours, Ltd., Premier Travel, Ltd., Southern National Omnibus Co., Ltd.. West Yorkshire Road Car Co.. Ltd., and Surmans Coaches, Ltd., Oxford, all seeking to introduce 8-ft.-wide and 30ft.-long vehicles. Some of these applications concern excursions to London during the Festival of Britain.

Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Licensing Authority has specified in recent grants that no vehicles over 27 ft. 6 ins. long and 7 ft. 6 ins, wide would be permitted on services operated by the following concerns: Southdown Motor Services, Ltd. (Benfleet and Wickford); Eastern Counties (Great Yarmouth-NorwichCambridge-London); Western Welsh (tours to London); City Coach Co., Ltd., and a number of others.

TRANSPORT IN FINLAND

THE Finnish railways are nation' alized, although road transport in that country remains under free enterprise. Some interesting comparisons between the situation there and in this country were made during a discussion. last week, between Mr. Frank F. Fowler, chairman of the Road Haulage Association, Mr. L. A. Turner, vicechairman of the National Taxi-Car Association, Mr. R. Morton Mitchell, the R.H.A.'s chief executive officer, and representatives of the Finnish Road Transport Association.

The function was arranged by the Austin Motor Co., Ltd.

GLICENCE DRIVERS' WAGES

WHEN the Minister of Labour, Mr. VV Isaacs, was asked by Mr. Poole whether the provision of the Road Haulage Wages Orders could be made applicable to drivers of C-licensed vehicles, his answer was "No."

The Minister said that large numbers of such drivers were covered by other agreements, and for those for whom no minimum rate had been fixed, there was procedure under the Road Haulage Wages Act, 1938, under which complaints could be referred to the Industrial Court.
