Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

DESPITE an earlier refusal, reported in "The Commercial Motor" last week, by the Minister of Transport to receive a deputation from the National Employers Federation of Vehicle Builders, to discuss the revocation of hauliers' permits, members of the Association met Mr. C. 3. Macdonald. assistant secretary to the Road Goods Transport Division of the Ministry, at the Ministry on Tuesday. Mr. G. E. Ash, chairman of the London branch. led the deputation.

The deputation pointed out the hardships that had occurred in the bodybuilding industry. Many orders placed at or since the Commercial Motor Show had been cancelled or held in abeyance, and unemployment was being caused.

5 PER CENT. RISE IN RATES JUSTIFIED

THE national rates committee of the Road Haulage Association has had under consideration the position arising from the increase of 7s. per week in the wages of adult road haulage workers, which comes into force on December 22 under the terms of R.H. (36), together with the other rises in costs which have occurred since May I. Tytes have risen in cost by 321 per cent., petrol by 1d. per gallon, and lubricating oil and spare parts are now dearer.

The committee finds that the cumulative effect of these increases would justify an addition of 5 per cent, to haulage charges.

Apart from the increase of 7s. a week for adult workers and juniors to whom adult rates apply, R.H. (36) awards other rises for juniors ranging from 2s. 6d. to 6s. per week. Only employees of Aand B-licence holders are affected.
