Bermondsey Borough Council has recently decided to purchase two 1-ton motor lorries of British manufacture at a total cost of £668. The council received eight tenders for the supply of the vehicles, these ranging in price from £144 to 1418 each, with an open body, and £152 to £440 each, with a tipping, body.
The committee, in recommending the purchase of the vehicles, stateethat, owing th the great amount of work in hand in the building works manager's department, the question of rapid transport is an essential factor in considering efficiency and the restriction of costs. At the present time a considerable amount of transport is effected by hiring motors or horse-drawn vehicles, and the latter method has proved slow and costly. It was stated that two lorries can be kept fully employed, and that they will accomplish three times
the amount of work done by a horse and van.
Prom figures showing costs which have been prepared by the council, it is shown that the cost of a horse and van per week with .driver, but not including depreciation, is £6 19s. '7d., whereas the cost of a lorry per week, including driver's wages, oil and petrol on an average mileage of 130 per week, repairs, renewals and tyres, and depreciation on £400 at the rate of 20 per cent., is £6 1.0s. 7d.
