Landmaster for export

NDMASTER, introduced this week by Leyland Vehicles for export irkets, follows the tradition of its bigger brother Landtrain which s sold over 900 units since last year, writes BILL BROCK.

nine to 12-tonnes bonneted ige, Landmaster replaces the stin WF, and is major compeon for Bedford, Mercedes, d Japanese manufacturers in veloping world markets. Leyid is represented in more than D overseas countries with les of about 15,000 units a ar worth around £120m.

resemblance to Landtrain. th incorporate features of the -steel G-cab design as fitted to rrier, Boxer, Mastiff, Super 3 stiff, Chieftain, Clydesdale id Reiver models. But ndmaster, with bonnet and ng assembly tilting about the int bumper, provides walk-in cess to the engine compartant.

hened windscreen. A roof hatch, heater, laminated screen and Sundym cab glass are available as optional equipment. Internally, all instruments and controls are finished in non-reflective black.

The naturally aspirated 6.98Series engine is offered at nine and 12 tonnes while a turbocharged variant can be specified for the 12-tonne model, offering a greater power output of 22kW (30bhp) rated at 108kW (145bhp) and with a maximum torque of 469Nm (3,451 lb/ft), an advantatage of 113Nm (830 lb/ft).

All three models in the range — designated 9.12, 12.12 and 12.15 — are fitted with a single dry plate clutch with the naturally aspirated engines matched to the 330mm (13in) diameter clutch, while the more powerful turbocharged units take the larger 335mm (141n) diameter clutch.

Either of the Turner T5-300 or T5-400 five-speed boxes or Eaton 475 and 542 boxes can be specified to match the respective power units, with Turner giving a wider spread of ratios for the naturally aspirated engine while the Eaton box provides deeper gears with the turbocharged engine.

Leyland Vehicles developed a new front axle for Landmaster rated at four tonnes with revised spring pad and kingpin centres claimed to improve steering lock. The parallel chassis frame, measuring 864mm (341n) wide, is made from high-yield steel of riveted construction incorporating alligator cross-members.

At the rear, a seven-tonne capacity axle has been specified with the 9.12, while an uprated nine-tonne version of the Albion axle is used with the 12.12 and 12.15 which can be specified with a two-speed shift. A range of axle ratios suit individual models and types of operation.

An air over hydraulic brake system on all models incorporates an air diaphragm master cylinder. Emergency and part brake requirements are satisfied by an air operated spring brake working on the rear axle.

Two steps provide access to a relatively well-appointed cab mounted high on the chassis. A wide door gives unobstructed entry to the driving seat, and internal dimensions are identical to those of the heavier Landtrain, accommodating seating for three. Externally, the differences in design of bonnet and wings produce a narrower overall width of 2.3m (7ft 61/2in).

Both steering and brake application require a level of effort which would be unacceptable in a European vehicle, but in developing countries improved

ride and handling qualities ai often used to produce fast, journey times. Higher speec over poor road conditions ca only result in a shorter vehic life.

In Landmaster, a compromic has been struck by providing high standard of comfort insic the cab and a suspension built1 require the minimum mainter ance.

Bonnet and wings tilt forwar as one piece on an unnecessari narrow pivot fixing to provic excellent access to the engin, Ground clearance looks to good as nothing hangs down b, low axle height.

Once again, Leyland has con bined proven components wit an overall improvement in do sign which will help the con pany maintain its share in an it creasingly competitive market.
