Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

RAISING rush-hour bus and rail fares in the Strathclyde Region to increase income would increase the use of cars and cause congestion. The Scottish Association for Public Transport points out that people who have cars make four out of every ten journeys in buses or trains.

The Association says 60 per cent of the people in Strathclyde depend entirely on public transport; and it calls for streamlining.

The Association says there should be a minimum level below which public transport services should not fall. Singlejourney fares should not cost more than the same journey in a car with one occupant.

School buses in remote areas could. also be used to carry ordinary bus passengers as well as providing extra shopping or evening services. It adds : " Similar possibilities arise in making better use of post vans or in using minbuses and taxis already available in various localities."

The association warns about raising fares. It warns against creating pressures on new roads used only during short peak periods.

Transcard type ticket s should be extended and supp. mented with discount tick booklets and greater use lower off-peak fares. The exi: ing bus service from the ci bus terminal to Glasgow A port should be replaced wi a new express bus service fro Buchanan Street/Queen Stre and running to the airpc through Glasgow Central az the bus terminal at Andersto
