• The first seagoing drive-through vehicle ferry to sail in Scottish coastal waters the Sound of Jura, operated by Western Ferries Ltd., Glasgow, comes into service on August 1 between Islay and the mainland. At a speed of 14 knots, the vessel can take up to 40 cars or a combination of cars and commercial vehicles.
