A SCOTTISH HAULAGE firm is shutting its doors after 100 years because one of its directors has decided to retire. Motherwell-based James Lewis & Sons is a fourth-generation business which operates 36 trucks and 50 trailers specialising in work for the building industry Lewis' managing director Archie Lewis says: "We have enjoyed many profitable and interesting years in haulage and it will be sad to see it end. But my brother Bobby has decided to retire. I have looked ahead and,
with the uncertainty of the Working Time Directive and the red tape involved I am not willing to pay him out because I don't know what the future holds.
"If the WTD was not coming into force I would definitely be continuing," he adds.
The company's fleet, including 10 late-model Mercedes Axor tractive units and two Seddon Atkinson Strato brick carriers, will be sold at Tadgedale Quarry, Market Drayton on 17 April by auctioneers Malcolm Harrison.
