• Norbert Dentressangle is shutting its Fareham depot with the loss of 24 drivers' jobs because increased fuel and VED rates mean the site is no longer profitable.
The work out of Fareham will now be undertaken by up to 25 subcontractors. It is hoped that alternative employment can be found for the ND drivers before the site closes at the end of this month.
NI) says it is so concerned about the effect of fuel rates on its UK business that it is considering flagging out— a decision is expected in the next two weeks.
• Around 20 owner-drivers hauling for Purfieet-basee HN Transport, the Belgian subsidiary of Transalliance, have lost their work to Belgian drivers who will run in the UK on cheaper continental fuel. Some of them have worked for HN for more than 20 years, picking up unaccompanied trailers that crossed on the ferry from Zeebrugge.
HN Transport will save around £250,000 a year by using Belgian trucks to accompany the trailers and deliver them throughout the UK. As soon as their fuel tanks run dry they will return to Belgium.
