A A driver whose truck was among the 160 vehicles in one of the worst motorway pile-ups in Britain was jailed last week for three months on a charge of dangerous driving.

David Fairclough's 22-tanner was said to have been travelling at more than 60mph on the fogbound M42 when it ploughed into the back of a stationary tanker which in turn hit a car, killing its driver. Fairclough, from Willenhall. West Midlands, who was himsetf injured, was the only one out of the 28 drivers prosecuted to receive a jail term. Most of the others were convicted of careless driving in the pile-up near Bromsgrove,Worcs in March 1997.

Fairclough was also banned from driving for four years and ordered to pay £700 costs.
